This research aims to provide a systematic re-reading and analysis of the pivotal and structural position of spirituality within the conceptual system of Islamic defensive thought, relying on Quranic foundations. This study seeks to move beyond merely jurisprudential or materialistic reductionist views of defense, demonstrating that spirituality—comprising concepts such as faith, reliance on God, patience, sincerity, and divine assistance—is not a peripheral or supplementary factor. Rather, it serves as the backbone and fundamental driving force that shapes identity, provides direction, and stabilizes the entire Islamic defensive framework. By reviving this comprehensive reading of revelatory texts, the present research aims to articulate a distinct defensive paradigm (ethical and sustainable) capable of offering a theoretical response to the contemporary security challenges facing the Islamic world. The central question of this study is how the element of spirituality functions and is positioned within the conceptual structure of Islamic defensive thought according to the Holy Quran. The main question is: How do Quran-derived spiritual concepts, and at what levels (teleological, identitarian, functional, and mystical), inform the foundations, objectives, methods, agents, and outcomes of the Islamic defensive system, thereby distinguishing it from secular and materialistic models? In other words, this research seeks to uncover a systematic pattern that elucidates the organic relationship between security—as the central ontological principle—and spirituality—as the guaranteeing infrastructure—in the Quranic discourse on defense. This study adopts the theoretical framework of thematic exegesis (tafsīr mawḍūʿī) of the Holy Quran and employs the method of interpreting the Quran by the Quran (tafsīr al-Qurʾān bi-l-Qurʾān). Within the thematic exegetical framework, the researcher centers on key concepts of defense, security, and spirituality, systematically collecting and categorizing all relevant verses throughout the Quran. Subsequently, using the Quran-by-Quran exegetical method, intra-textual verses are cross-referenced and analyzed based on context, coherence, and internal consistency of the divine discourse to extract the Quran's comprehensive viewpoint. This approach, which emphasizes thematic unity and the absence of contradiction in the verses, enables a coherent and minimally erroneous conceptual analysis of the Islamic defensive system. The examination and analysis of Quranic verses in this research yield structured findings that classify the components of spirituality in Islamic defensive thought along two main axes. In the first axis, spiritual components are organized into five key conceptual categories: (1) Teleological concepts, such as "fī sabīl Allāh" (in the way of God), which elevate the ultimate purpose of jihad from material conflicts to a sacred realm for attaining divine pleasure; (2) identity-imparting concepts, such as faith and "ṣibghat Allāh" (the color/dye of God), which bestow a divine identity upon the mujāhid and the Islamic society, clearly delineating it from the camp of falsehood; (3) supportive concepts, including the descent of tranquility (sakīna) and unseen aids, which present supernatural backing as conditional upon the piety (taqwā) and patience of the believers; (4) stabilizing concepts, such as patience (ṣabr) and reliance (tawakkul), which bear the responsibility of steadfastness and fortification for fighters, exponentially enhancing their qualitative strength; and (5) mystical concepts, such as "ramy Allāh" (God's throwing) and "bayʿ Allāh" (transaction with God), which reveal the ultimate intertwining of the mujāhid's action with divine will, transforming martyrdom into a sublime transaction with God. In the second axis, the research demonstrates that these spiritual concepts are not confined to individual motivation but centrally influence all levels and pillars of defensive thought. This systematic impact is elaborated across ten defensive domains: Spirituality constitutes and sustains the principle of jihad; in foundational and delimitative roles, it serves as the criterion of legitimacy and ethical limiter; in concrete and methodological aspects, it sanctifies means and deters from illegitimate tactics; in jurisprudential, covenantal, and structural domains, it guarantees the health and divine efficacy of rules and institutions. Furthermore, in the agent domain, it shapes the fighter's identity and generates faith-based power; in the productive domain, it imbues outcomes such as martyrdom with meaning, transforms apparent defeat into spiritual victory, and ensures the ideological survival of Islamic society. Collectively, these findings present an image of an integrated defensive system in which spirituality flows as the vital blood in its life arteries. This research concludes that Islamic defensive thought, based on a systematic Quranic reading, constitutes a comprehensive and multi-layered conceptual system that places security as the primary telos and spirituality as the supplying infrastructure at its core. In this paradigm, defense is not merely a physical reaction but a collective act of worship and jihad, fully intertwined with metaphysical and divine concepts—from the stage of intention and goal-setting (fī sabīl Allāh) to execution (with tawakkul and ṣabr) and even outcome (martyrdom as eternal life). This framework distinguishes Islamic defense from materialistic models (which seek efficacy in quantitative and technological superiority) and manifests its superiority through soft power derived from faith, internal cohesion, spiritual resilience, and ethical legitimacy. Therefore, spirituality in this thought is not an optional choice but a fundamental and indispensable necessity for achieving a just, sustainable, and effective defense in safeguarding the essence of Islamic society. The research emphasizes the capacity of this spiritual-material model to address complex contemporary threats, provided it is creatively retrieved and re-read.
