The objective of this research is to examine and elucidate the systematic nature of Quranic knowledge or content as a comprehensive and rich source of knowledge. This study seeks to present reasons and evidence demonstrating the coherence and unity of Quranic knowledge. The Quran is examined not merely as a religious text but as an epistemic system capable of contributing to the intellectual and cultural development of societies. To this end, the primary goal of the research is to explain how the concepts and verses of the Quran cohere and to identify the factors that produce unity and order within its text. The central problem addressed by this study is: what reasons and evidence can be adduced to affirm the coherence and systematic character of the Quranic teachings? This question seeks to answer how various types of evidence—both external and internal to the text—can be employed to prove this systematic quality and what impact such proof has on understanding the Quranic teachings. In other words, the research aims to demonstrate that the Noble Quran, as a revealed text, possesses a distinctive structure and order that significantly influences the comprehension of its meanings and concepts. Despite the diversity of topics and verses, the coherence and interconnectedness of the Quran are clearly observable. Therefore, it is particularly important to examine the factors that contribute to textual coherence and to expound
the theories of exegetes in this domain. This research employs two principal approaches: (1) non-religious methods: These include general systems theory and grounded-theory approaches that assist in content analysis of the Quran and the discovery of its coherent theories. This approach identifies patterns and relationships among various concepts in the Quran and enables us to analyze the text from scientific perspectives. (2) Religious theories: These comprise the views of Muslim scholars who have explored the coherence and systematic character of Quranic teachings.
To prove the substantive coherence of the Quran, the following methods and elements are utilized: (1) Linguistic methods, including: causation and explanation, emphasis and parenthetical addition, apposition and exemplification, particularization of the general, qualification of the absolute. These methods help clarify the semantic and structural connections between verses and chapters. (2) Elements of textual cohesion: reference, substitution, ellipsis, lexical cohesion, and logical sentence connectives. These elements contribute to continuity and harmony in the Quranic text. (3) Semantic unity: The presence of general and specific key terms throughout the Quran is an indicator of substantive coherence. These key terms help the reader attain a deeper understanding of concepts and themes. (4) Context and inter-verse connections: Context is the continuity and semantic linkage of verses. Examining context facilitates better comprehension of verses and demonstrates the Quran’s substantive coherence. This concept aids in understanding the meanings of verses and their interconnections.
(5) Theories of Islamic scholars: Many Muslim thinkers have emphasized the importance of the Quran’s substantive coherence. Notable among these theories are: The theory of the Quran’s unity: the Quran as a single, unified discourse with coherence and interconnectedness among its parts. The theory of the “pillar” or central axis of each surah: every chapter revolves around one core theme. (6) Major exegetes such as ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī and Ayatollah Ṣadr have investigated the coherence and systematic order of the Quran. They hold that every surah possesses an overall objective and that all of its verses are interrelated in some manner. The research methodology combines qualitative analysis with the examination of diverse texts. Drawing on authoritative scholarly sources, the theories of exegetes and Muslim thinkers, such as ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī, Farāhī, and others, are scrutinized. The study analyzes elements of textual cohesion (reference, substitution, ellipsis, and logical sentence linkage) while also paying attention to the context of verses and the overall objective of surahs. The findings of this research demonstrate that the Noble Quran possesses a distinctive systematic character that can be proven through diverse scientific and religious theories. This systematic quality encompasses not only spiritual and ethical dimensions but also theoretical and social ones. For example, the Quran repeatedly invites rational reflection and logical reasoning and stresses the necessity of employing the intellect to attain
truth. This study emphasizes that the Quran, as a living and dynamic text, possesses conclusive evidence of the coherence and unity of its teachings and can therefore be recognized as a credible and universal source. This text is capable of contributing to the intellectual and cultural development of societies. Researchers and thinkers must engage in precise examination and analysis of the Quranic teachings in order to benefit from this divine treasure. The present research also enables us to discover a deeper connection between science and religion and to achieve a better understanding of the Quranic teachings—an understanding that can promote the dissemination of Quranic teachings and their proper application in daily life. Furthermore, the results of this study show that the substantive coherence of the Quran is effective not only in comprehending its meanings but also in explaining the relationships among its concepts and doctrines. Consequently, this research can serve as a reliable resource for scholars and those interested in Quranic sciences and the philosophy of religion, contributing to a deeper understanding of the teachings of the Noble Quran. The coherence and systematic order of the Quranic teachings not only facilitate a better understanding of this sacred text but can also serve as guidance for the individual and social life of Muslims. Therefore, precise and scholarly investigation of these teachings will help promote and strengthen human and ethical values in Islamic societies.
